Mapping the Assessment of Student Engagement in TEL: An Exploratory Review

The METELS project’s latest research has been published in the 2025 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies. The paper explores how student engagement—a key factor linked to positive academic outcomes—is being assessed in technology-enhanced learning (TEL) environments. Through an exploratory literature review, the research maps the different ways engagement is measured, focusing on the interplay between self-reported experiences, learning analytics, and ethical considerations.

It also examines the benefits and potential risks of engagement measurement in TEL, highlighting important ethical challenges and opportunities for promoting digital well-being. The review identifies critical gaps in current research and suggests directions for future studies, particularly at the intersection of student engagement, TEL, ethics, and well-being.

This work contributes to the METELS project’s mission to support effective and responsible digital learning, providing insights for researchers, educators, and policymakers.
